#1 Chittorgarh Fort – The pride of the town
As soon as you reach Chittorgarh, this fort is the first place that you must visit between 9.45 am to 6.30 pm. This fort stands tall on a hill, looking all majestic as if it were yet protecting the city and its dwellers. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fort has seven gates, all of them being massive in their size to depict their protective nature against the enemies. Crafted in the 12th century, this tower is dedicated to Lord Adinathji, the 1st Jain Tirthankar. Having a close look at the structure will reveal your beautiful carvings of figurines belonging to the Digambar tribe. These carvings reflect the cultural beliefs of the Digambar. #3 Vijay Stambha – Tower of Victory
Built-in 1440AD with red sandstone and white marble by Maharana Kumbha, the beautiful Vijay Stambha stands tall in the premises of Chittorgarh Fort. The Maharana wanted to commemorate his victory over Mohammed Khilji which is why this nine-storey tower was erected. #4 Padmini’s Palace – The Epitome of Beauty
The Padmini Palace is the epitome of beauty that the Queen possessed. The palace has a history dating back to an era when she used to be the wife of Rana Ratan Singh. A brave swordswoman during that time, her beauty was the talk of the town. Inspired by the stories of her beauty, Alauddin Khilji was lured to see her. Hence, the Padmini Palace had a mirror placed inside the main hall from where Khilji could see her alluring beauty. This made him fight a fierce battle with Rana Ratan Singh. #5 Rana Kumbha Palace – The Royal Residence
One of the largest monuments situated inside the massive Chittorgarh Fort, the Rana Kumbha Palace was at a heightened glory during its time. This was once a royal residence to people like Bappa Rawal, Maharana Kumbha, Rani Padmani, Meera Bai among others. This palace also tells the tales of legend Panna Dhai, who saved the life of infant Udai Singh by sacrificing her own child. The dungeons of this palace are supposed to be the place where Rani Padmani and other women of the palace committed johar. Johar was a practice that was common among women back then in order to protect themselves from being captured by the enemy after losing a battle. The practice involved women throwing themselves to self-immolation. This palace hosts a light and sound show every evening, which is a must-visit.
#6 Gaumukh Reservoir – The Large Water Reservoir
This is a beautiful place in Chittorgarh Fort and also holds religious significance. This large water reservoir is named after a rock formation located in the edge of the cliff side that resembles the mouth of a cow, hence justifying the name. As per the legends, the tank is considered sacred by the locals since it has never gone dry. An idol of Goddess Laxmi and Shivaling is placed beneath were the waterfalls. The activity of feeding the fishes in the water is what attracts tourists here in large numbers. You can visit this place between 9.30 am to 6.30 pm.
#7 Fateh Prakash Palace – The Maharana Pratap Palace
Sitting in the huge complex of Chittorgarh Fort, this palace was built by Maharana Pratap Singh. This palace is distinct from the others due to the modern style of architecture as opposed to the rest. A big Ganesh idol, a fountain, manifold crystal objects, and different frescoes adorn the grounds of this palace, which make it worth seeing once. This palace is now a house to a museum that will help you better understand the history of the palace, the fort and the city of Chittorgarh. Pay a sum of Rs.30 per head and enter this palace between 10 am to 4.30 pm.
#8 Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary – An abode of the fauna
Apart from the fort and the palaces inside, Chittorgarh has a Sitamata Wildlife Sanctuary that you can visit. It was only declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1979. Various flora like teak, tendu, bamboo, amla and salar along with countless fauna such as the flying squirrel, spotted deer, wild bear, four-horned antelope, nilgai, jungle cat, jackal, hyena, caracal wild boar, leopards, wild pangolin can be spotted here. scattered over an area of 423 sq.kms, the Jakham and Karmoi Rivers flow through the sanctuary. As per the legends, Sita, the wife of Lord Ram, is said to have inhabited the ashram of Saint Valmiki in this forest during her separation from Lord Ram and hence justifies the name of this place. For a mere price of Rs.10 you can enter the sanctuary between 8am to 5pm. To reach this destination, you can either book a private cab or rent one or if traveling in your personal vehicle then take the route from Pratapgarh via Udaipur-Pratapgarh road.
#9 Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary
This sanctuary about 25kms away from the city of Chittorgarh and is worth a visit. The calm and peacefulness that you will seek is beyond words. You will get to see trees like dhok, salar, churel, butea and also animals like panthers, chitals, wild boars, hyenas, jackals, four-horned antelopes among others. You will find complete solitude amidst this nature’s paradise where you will hear terrifying but soothing sounds of the birds. The Bassi Dam is also another attraction nearby.
